During colder temperatures our hair can often lose a lot of moisture and become frizzy and unmanageable. We at AB Hair and makeup have put together a few tips you can take to protect your hair and keep it looking smooth and shiny.
1. Moisturise your hair: Hydration is key to combatting frizz. Have a chat to your stylist of changing your shampoo and conditioner during the Winter months. Using a moisturising shampoo and conditioner will give your hair all the elements to combat the frizz and moisturise your hair. Also try to nourish your body from the inside, so keep hydrated with drinking lots of water. 2. Deep conditioning treatments: Treat your hair to regular deep conditioning treatments to provide extra moisture and nourishment. 3. Limit heat styling: Heat styling tools like straighteners and curling irons can strip moisture from your hair and contribute to frizz. Minimize their use during the winter months and opt for heatless styling techniques instead, such as air drying, braiding, or using foam rollers. If a hairdryer is used make sure you set it to medium heat, this will also avoid over drying of hair and scalp. 4. Protect your hair from the elements: When venturing outdoors, particularly in windy or rainy weather, protect your hair by wearing a hat, scarf, or headband to shield it from the elements. This not only keeps you warm but can help prevent your hair from being exposed to excessive moisture or getting tangled. 5. Avoid over-washing: We recommend washing your hair 3x per week, washing your hair too frequently can strip away its natural oils, leading to dryness and frizz. Washing your hair less will also cause build up on the scalp which can form scalp conditions like dandruff, itchy scalp and flaky scalp or more serious conditions. Keep your scalp clean and find a good balance when it comes to washing hair. 6. Use anti-frizz products: Apply anti-frizz products to your hair after washing and conditioning. These products help to seal the hair cuticle and reduce frizz. Talk to our experienced stylist about what products that are specifically formulated for frizzy hair and are suitable for your hair type. 7. Comb gently: When detangling or styling your hair, use a wide-toothed comb or a detangling brush to minimize breakage and frizz. Start from the ends and work your way up, being gentle to avoid unnecessary tension. Our recommendations will be Tangle Teezer and Wet brush ranges. Wet brushes are available in our store @ AB Hair and makeup. 8. Protect your hair while sleeping: Friction from pillowcases and tossing and turning during sleep can contribute to frizz. Switch to a silk or satin pillowcase or use a silk/satin hair wrap to protect your hair while you sleep. For people with long hair, it is recommended to put your hair up in a braid when you go to sleep, that will eliminate frizz and breakage.
By following these tips and adopting a hair care routine that focuses on moisture and protection, you can significantly reduce frizz during the winter months in New Zealand.
