Summer hair care

Updated: Jun 19, 2023

Summer's here – which is great news for anyone indulging in some well-deserved R&R, but potentially not such great news for your hair.

Humidity's up, and you're enjoying more time in the sun, on the sand and in the surf. Here are a few tips to help keep your locks gorgeous and healthy through the hotter months.

Book in for a trim

It's no myth; hair really does grow faster in summer! So, make sure you perk up your style and rid yourself of any pesky split ends at the start of the season and mid-way too.

Protect your hair like you'd protect your skin

The most effective way to stop the sun damaging your hair is to put a real barrier in the way. So, wear a scarf or hat when you can. Look for conditioners that contain SPF, and consider using a leave-in UV filter spray too, especially on the ends.

Drench your hair before you take a dip

If your hair is saturated with clean, fresh water or leave-in conditioner, it can't easily absorb as much salty seawater or chemically-treated pool water. Rinse your hair as soon as possible after your swim. If you're at the beach (without access to a shower), you could take a spray bottle of water with you.

Keep the rest of you hydrated too

Make sure you drink enough water. Good hydration levels help your skin stay soft and supple, and a well-hydrated scalp can reduce hair fall. You might like to swap in a glass of coconut water from time to time. It's high in potassium, and potassium deficiency can be one of the causes of hair loss.

Step away from the heated styling devices

Once or twice a week, try to avoid the blow drier, straighteners and/or curling tongs. Julia Papworth (celebrity stylist who's worked with the likes of Cameron Diaz and Elijah "Frodo Baggins" Wood) suggests washing your hair in the evening and then tying it up into a bun or ponytail overnight. "When you wake up, you'll have a nice beachy wave," she says.
